What You Need to Know About Transportation and Logistics at the U.S. and Mexico Border

One of the key reasons to choose CaliBaja manufacturing is our proximity to the border. Our location near the border between the United States and Mexico provides clients with logistical advantages, from ease of shipping to significant cost savings. If you’re interested in working with a contract manufacturer in Mexico, you need to know about the efficient transportation and logistics that you stand to benefit from. Here’s an overview about transportation across the border and how we can enhance your business model:

Transportation Options

Transportation of goods from Mexico to the United States is often cheaper than shipping from overseas manufacturers, largely because ships aren’t required and the two countries have mutually beneficial trade agreements.

When products are ready to be transported from Mexico into the U.S., the most common method is via truck. This can be accomplished in two different ways: transloading truckloads, or the direct trailer method.

If you go the transloading route, a cross-border carrier from Mexico drives the freight to a secured yard or transloading facility. From there, the warehouse transfer occurs and the freight is reloaded with a U.S. carrier to be transported to its final destination.

The other transportation via truckload option is direct trailering. This type of shipping eliminates the need to move products into other carriers, which some clients prefer as it can reduce the risk of damage. Unlike transloading, goods moved by direct trailer will remain on the same trailer throughout the entirety of the journey. However, seals may need to be broken in order for regulation checks.

An up-and-coming transportation option is intermodal cross-border freight transport. This method of transportation utilizes Mexico’s railroad system to move products efficiently. Canadian Pacific and Kansas City Southern Railroads recently merged to create a rail system now known as the CPKC. This is an exciting development, as the goal is to streamline the process and create an end-to-end border shipping solution.
